Pasta Spats: Canadian Wheat Exports to Italy Slump over Glyphosate

The world’s largest pasta maker says it has had to cutback Canadian imports of durum wheat – a key ingredient in pasta – because of ongoing consumer concerns about the use of a popular weed killer – glyphosate.

Barilla’s purchasing director Emilio Ferrari told grain groups in Toronto last week the company has cut back their Canadian wheat imports by 35 per cent, despite the fact Canadian durum wheat is of exceptional quality. No contracts for Canadian durum are being signed right now, he said.

The reason is that some Italian consumers are fearful Canadian wheat has been “poisoned” because it tested positive for traces of the popular and widely-used herbicide glyphosate, he said………..

…..However, glyphosate has come under intense public scrutiny in Europe, with Italy banning the use of the chemical as a pre-harvest treatment in 2016. “We never use it but they banned the usage, because we don’t need it,” Ferrari said. He told attendees at the Canadian Global Crops Symposium his company is currently unwilling to accept shipments with glyphosate tracings above 10 parts per billion.

Concerns about glyphosate will continue to be an issue, he said – urging Canadian producers to find an alternative. However, Canadian producers argue the current limits set by Italy are simply too low to meet because glyphosate is commonly used within acceptable limits and traces of the herbicide are found throughout this country’s bulk handling grain system. The majority of Canadian durum wheat is not treated with glyphosate pre-harvest.

Italy’s decision followed a review of the herbicide by the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer’s (IARC) in 2015 that listed the herbicide as a Group 2a carcinogen, meaning it probably causes cancer in people…….

….Canada and Italy have been embattled in a simmering trade dispute over durum wheat exports for several years, stemming from a “Made in Italy” country of origin label.

Under the policy, which was set to take effect in mid-February, processors are required to identify where their durum wheat was grown and milled into the semolina flour used to make pasta. Similarly, rice packaging must identify where the rice was grown, treated and processed.

TOXIC FOOD is killing humanity: One-fifth of global deaths now linked to processed junk food and toxic ingredients

A new study conducted at the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington (HealthData.org) and published in The Lancet medical journal finds that a shocking 20 percent of global deaths are caused by toxic foods, junk foods, processed foods and harmful food ingredients. In essence, the study reveals that the toxic food industry is now about as dangerous as Big Tobacco.

As covered in The Guardian:

The study, based at the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, compiles data from every country in the world and makes informed estimates where there are gaps… Diet is the second highest risk factor for early death after smoking. The problem is often seen as the spread of western diets, taking over from traditional foods in the developing world.

In other words, all the toxic food ingredients, processed foods, junk foods and fast foods that we’ve been warning you about for years are now being recognized by the science establishment to be one of the leading killers of human beings across our planet. Many of these foods are saturated with glyphosate and pesticides, and an increasing number are also genetically engineered.

Glyphosate Residues Discovered in Almond Milk, Bread and Veggie Burgers

New laboratory testing commissioned by Moms Across America has shown the presence of the world’s most used herbicide – glyphosate – in almond milk, vegetarian burgers, bread and Skippy’s “100% Natural” peanut butter and Lipton’s “100% Natural” Mint and Green tea.

The new batch testing results showed that conventional almond milk contained glyphosate at a level of 0.87 ppb and certified organic almond milk contained 0.07 ppb. The batch bread testing showed a range of glyphosate residues from 6.47 ppb to 140 ppb. Conventional veggie burgers batch testing revealed 52.20 ppb of glyphosate. Certified organic veggie burgers contained 3.27 ppb.

“100% Natural” Skippy peanut butter was found to contain 11.71 ppb of glyphosate residue and “100% Natural” Lipton Tea was found to contain 108.90 ppb and Lipton’s “100% Natural” Green Tea contained 208.29 ppb.

Republicans Back Monsanto, Threaten to Cut WHO’s Funding Which Calls Glysophate ‘Carcinogenic’

Right-wing lawmakers and industry makers targeted the IARC for its research in 2015 that linked glyphosate to possible cancer in humans.

Some Republican lawmakers have bashed the International Agency for Research on Cancer, IARC, a World Health Organization, WHO, agency and threatened to cut its funding over for calling a widely used herbicide chemical, glyphosate as a possible “carcinogenic” at a House Science Committee hearing.

Right-wing lawmakers and industry makers targeted the IARC for its research in 2015 that linked glyphosate to possible cancer in humans.

On Tuesday, a Republican representative from Texas, Lamar Smith, said the health regulating agency’s claims were “unsubstantiated” and “not backed by reliable data.”

“The selective use of data and the lack of public disclosure raise questions about why IARC should receive any government funding in the future,” Smith said.

WHO is defending its stance based on years-long research.

ORGANIC CONSUMERS ASSOCIATION GLYPHOSATE FACT SHEET

Glyphosate, the key ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide, is the most widely used herbicide in the world. Its residues are found in water and soil. It’s sprayed along roadsides, sidewalks, parks and playgrounds, gardens, and on school grounds. Testing shows a variety of foods contain glyphosate. It has been detected in the urine of the majority of people who have submitted samples for testing. Glyphosate has been found in breast milk, it damages
the placenta and it crosses the placenta, which may result in birth defects.
Studies by independent scientists show that at the levels commonly found in the environment, on our food and in our bodies—levels that are lower than those allowed by regulatory agencies on our food—glyphosate causes a wide
range of diseases and birth defects.

Europe gives controversial pesticide glyphosate a five-year reprieve

“Glyphosate will be the final nail in Brussels’ coffin.” It was in such categorical terms that Czech MEP Kateřina Konečná spoke at the European Parliament Committee on the Environment, hours after the European Union approved the use of the chemical for another five years. It is the culmination of a battle pitting corporate interests and political manoeuvring against the health of European citizens.
